Sci-fi games allow game developers to craft incredible worlds and characters and see how far their imagination can fly. Here are some games in 2024 that’ll scratch that itch for gamers.
#50 Nine Sols
Things are often not as they appear, case and point Nine Sols – a dark and intriguing game with a beautiful visual style that hides its sinister overtones. A tight and fast platformer. Building on advances made by some of the best platformers in the industry: the gameplay is smooth and fluid and linking several devastating attacks together is silky. Additionally, this game pairs a dark and somber story with a sincere soundtrack that’s thought invoking, to say the least. There’s a demo available on steam that may tide you over till its release, or make you more desperate for further updates.
#49 Unknown 9: Awakening
It’s not often that a game breaks the mold of what it is to be a game. Unknown 9: Awakening is an enigmatic entry into the gaming world that seeks to break down the boundaries of the medium. From comic books to podcasts, the game will be part of a larger ecosystem built on multiple forms of content. This intricate architecture hints at a unique detective experience in which the players unearth secrets and mysteries. Little beyond the above and a somewhat cryptic introduction video is known about Unknown 9: Awakening. No gameplay videos have been unveiled yet. Despite the lack of information on Unknown 9 the game is sure to set itself apart.
#48 Pragmata
Capcom has made a lot of unique IP over the years (even though they refuse to bring some of them back like Darkstalkers and Viewtiful Joe…), but some might argue that Pragmata is one of their most unique.
We say this because the teaser trailer for the game shows a lot of things that at present don’t make sense. Including the fate of Earth as it looks as though it’s both collapsed, and also surrounded by some kind of unique technology.
Furthermore, there is a strange girl in the trailer who is “protected” by someone in a spacesuit, and yet it’s clear that the girl isn’t quite human.
So what is the point of this game? We’ll just have to wait for more information.
#47 Homeworld 3
In what feels like an homage to the famous novel Dune by Frank Herbert. Homeworld 3 is a glorious space-based tactical game arriving in the first half of 2024. In keeping with previous entries into the franchise, the trailers show off vastly detailed battle environments filled with an array of routes to take advantage of. Command your troops in an all-out offensive against any would-be raiders. This is the stomping grounds of tacticians, so you’ll have to plan your movements carefully, being ever mindful of the terrain and the various environmental hazards it holds.
#46 ARC Raiders
When you have the force of ex-Battlefield developer Patrick Söderland behind a game that should bode well for it’s future prospects. As a free-to-play third person shooter, you’re pit against robotic AI who fall from space at unrelenting frequency. Gear up and shoot them all down in this fast-paced squad-based shooter coming soon to all new consoles and PC.
#45 Level Zero
Level Zero is a survival horror PVP game. In this title, players are stepping into the future, where humanity has reached the far corners of the universe. Landing on a planet, the scientists tasked with exploring the area soon discover it’s filled with hostile alien creatures. The game is broken up into two teams. Four scientists will be tasked with completing a series of objectives to escape the area. Meanwhile, two players will be alien creatures that must hunt down and kill the scientists. With light being your primary defense against alien creatures, players must rely on different light sources to ensure the area is safe to venture around the map.
#44 Routine
Welcome to the moon. It’s supposed to be a nice place to live. They even built a base here themed on what the 80s thought the future would be like. But it’s not fun and games once you enter the base. The people who ran the place are gone, and yet you’re not alone in the complex.
There’s something else in there, and it thinks you’re a threat to it. Unfortunately for you, the game isn’t a shooter, so you’ll need to run and hide from the dangers that lurk around every corner and only fight when you have no other choice.
What happened in this base? What is chasing you? Play the game and find out!
#43 Luna Abyss
What do you think is the worst prison sentence you can possibly get? In Luna Abyss, you’ll discover how bad it can be when you’re convicted of a crime and sentenced to a moon but not just any moon, a “mimic moon” full of technology from an ancient race.
Your goal is to collect as much technology as possible without getting killed, all the while being watched by your AI Warden.
But don’t think there aren’t entities within this moon that won’t hurt you if given a chance. The remnant of the civilization within this moon still lives, and the deeper you go, the more your fate will be revealed!
#42 Ripout
Are you ready for a co-op horror experience that’s unlike any other? Then get ready for Ripout.
Humanity is on its last legs in the game after an experiment has gone wrong. They tried to make a weapon to fight off an alien invasion but got owned by their creation. Fast forward to 2084, and you are humanity’s last chance of getting their world back.
You’ll wander through various ships and try to weed out enemies using a sentient “pet gun” that you wield. The gun has many uses, so choose wisely as you work through procedurally-generated levels that’ll keep you on your toes!
#41 ALARA Prime
Swedish game developer Fall Damage Studios has unveiled ALARA Prime, an online free-to-play first-person shooter. Other games emphasize fast-paced, reflex-based combat. However, ALARA sets its sights on a tactics-based environment. Similar to Valorant, ALARA places an emphasis on teamwork and team-based maneuvers in a 4x4x4 capture-the-base style scenario. This is all brought to us by four industry veterans originally responsible for founding the game development house DICE. This means that fans will be graced with a game that is both visually stunning and incredibly polished.
#40 Dune Awakening
The Dune universe is widely considered one of the best set of sci-fi stories out there. With its new movie out now, more people than ever are wanting to dive into it, and games like Dune Awakening are going to help with that.
Dune Awakening is an MMO set on the desert planet of Arrakis, just like in the original books and movies. You’ll create your character from one of the many races that are within the lore, and then set out to create your own story and legend.
You can do what you want in the game. You can fight, you can explore, you can expand, you can gain power, it’s all about you and your own story. How will you etch your name into history?
#39 Hyper Light Breaker
Fans of the Hyper Light Drifter will find a new game set within the same universe. However, Hyper Light Breaker is different because this is a 3D-action RPG. So far, we know that players will explore a new land within the Hyper Light universe. However, you’ll soon find yourself fighting against a mysterious king. With developers promising hordes of enemies to battle and gigantic bosses, this should make for a fluid action RPG and an intense one. Fortunately, you won’t have to scavenge the world to a new arsenal of weapons to defeat your foes alone. Instead, this game will provide online cooperative support so you and a friend can go through this epic journey together.
#38 The First Descendant
A futuristic shooter will be arriving soon, and it’s called The First Descendant. The game features you and others as beings known as “Descendants,” and it’s up to you to save your continent from an invasion.
You’ll accept missions and head out to stop the invaders. As you progress, you’ll get stronger and learn more about who the Descendants are and what is the source of their power. Each Descendant is different, wields different weapons, has unique abilities, etc. Choose the best option for you and see if you can save humanity.
Powered by Unreal Engine 5, this may be one of the most beautiful games you will ever see.
#37 Plan 8
The team behind MMO favorites like Black Desert Online are suiting up to get another MMO out into the world – this time an MMO Shooter in the form of of Plan 8. While it has now been quite a while since we’ve learned any more about Plan 8, the promise of humans wearing exosuits, and a variety of upgradable abilities has us holding onto hope that we’ll get more information soon.
#36 Quantum Error
Are you ready for a horror story that will test your skills and sanity?
Quantum Error starts out as a simple rescue title. A research facility off the coast of California has come under distress. The place is on fire, and people are trapped inside. You are Captain Jacob Thomas, who leads a crew to the facility to try and get them out before the place collapses.
But once you arrive, everything changes. The cause of the incident isn’t what you think, and now you’re trying to survive the darkness that awaits you. So be ready to fight for your life because it’s absolutely on the line.
#35 Star Wars: Eclipse
Quantic Dream have long been known for their in-depth narrative adventures, and so the prospect of bringing that skillset to the new Star Wars High Republic is mighty enticing. The world looks incredibly impressive, and while we know little more than the setting at this point, the combination of the world and the talent should leave us all more than excited enough for whenever it drops.
#34 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
Certain world events have kept S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl from coming out this year, and that’s fine because that means by the time it arrives it’ll be truly ready to go.
In the game, you’ll once again go into the exclusion zone of Chernobyl, but being as a second bomb went off near the area nearly two decades before, it’s a much different place now than it was then.
You’ll need to search the grounds, get materials, and most importantly, stay away from foes. Not the least of which are the horrifying mutants that you will see from time to time.
Do you think you can survive what this place has become?
#33 Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth
Are you ready to get back on the job? Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth will take fans to the original film and its setting to see what it’s like for a Blade Runner who doesn’t have his job anymore. Or at least, he doesn’t until the job wants him to come back on.
But what does this runner do when their targets aren’t around anymore? The game is loose on details, but given the original movie’s impact on the world of sci-fi, fans old and new can expect callbacks and fresh content to make the world feel alive.
Or maybe it’s just…replicated.
#32 Dread Pilots
Welcome to purgatory! No, seriously, welcome to purgatory. In Dread Pilots, you play someone who is caught in “The Dread” and has to do your best to survive long enough to get out! But that won’t be easy, given all the monsters and terrors that reside in this place.
The only thing you’ll have to fight back against these threats is your ship. It won’t be able to do much at the beginning of the game. But, through clever tactics, bartering, and stealing, you can up the ante and make it a machine of incredible power.
Just remember, The Dread is alive, so expect the unexpected.
#31 Synduality: Echo of Ada
In the year 2222, humanity is truly in a terrible place. A cursed rain has forced humanity underground and created creatures that now roam around, seeking to annihilate the population.
You are one of the Drifters who search for special crystals underground to help the populace. You’re partnered with an AI that is there to help you in battle and guide you to where you need to go. But as you go on your journey with the crystals, a series of events will test you, and you’ll fight for your life.
Will you be able to complete your missions and help the people? Or will you be caught by the monstrous Enders?
#30 Ashfall
When it comes to post-apocalyptic games, the question isn’t just where you are going but where you can explore to see just how post-apocalyptic things have gotten. In Ashfall, you’ll be set in a world based on both the post-apocalyptic theme, and Eastern cultures.
You can choose to take on the wasteland alone, or you can see if your friends want to join you and make a guild so you can be safer in numbers. There is strength in unity. Plus, you’ll be able to head out into the far reaches of the desert to find places that no one has set in before!
#29 Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League
What? We’re on a superhero kick right now, so yeah, we put Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League towards the top spot. Plus, there’s a character named King Shark, what’s more sci-fi than that? Don’t say lightsabers…
Anyway, in this title, the evil Starro has descended from the stars and is trying to take over the world via the Justice League (who are under its control). As a result, the “greatest heroes” we have left to try and stop them are…the Suicide Squad. Yep, this couldn’t possibly go wrong.
Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, King Shark and Deadshot will each be playable to you, and you can even bring in friends to co-op the squad to get the job done!
#28 Replaced
Welcome to an alternate version of…the past! Surprised, right? Well, in Replaced, you’ll be set in a Cyberpunk version of the 1980s, where things have taken a dark turn.
Nuclear events have put the human race on the back foot, and you play an AI that is trapped inside the shell of a human body. Pretty dark, huh? Don’t worry, it’ll get worse. The city you’re in is full of corrupted people, and you’ll have to endure it all if you wish to find a way out of your situation.
What truths lie at the end of your journey? Will you make it long enough to find them out?
#27 Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks
What happens when a bunch of Orks get the “need for speed”? Well, nothing good, we can tell you that! But the good news is that you’re one of those Orks, and now you get to make your own “mob of speedsters” and attempt to prove that your piece of metal is better than anything else on the planet.
Build up your racer to be the fastest around, and then outfit it with weapons so it can take out the competition that is all around you.
Enjoy the thrill of the chase and hunt, and see if you can come out on top! What’s the worst that can happen?
#26 Judas
What do you do when you’re on a starship destined to crash and destroy everyone inside? Will you attempt to make alliances to get out alive? Or will you betray them the moment you get the chance? In Judas, those are your options.
The narrative FPS title will test your morality as you work alongside enemies in an attempt to get through a dangerous ship. But with every new obstacle, your “bond” will be tested. Your choices matter in this game, so be careful what you do, what you say, and who you ally with. Will you make it out alive? Or will you literally crash and burn?
#25 ExoMecha
Here’s one of many games on this list where we can’t say it’ll arrive in 2024. ExoMecha was announced back in 2024 and is a “competitive first-person shooter.” Plus, it has “mech” in the title, so you know there will be plenty of mech action for people to have fun in.
Not everyone will be in a mech, so you better be prepared for a land battle to see just how long you can last in the fight. Then, if you get a mech, use what weapons you have to lay waste to the enemy so your side can win!
Think you’re up to the task?
#24 Arknights: Endfield
Are you ready to enter a vast world where there are tons of possibilities and numerous dangers? If so, then get ready for Arknights: Endfield!
The game will feature 3D RPG elements mixed with real-time battles and strategy that’ll help in your journey to explore a mysterious world that has a unique tie to a mysterious organization you’re a part of.
What awaits you as you go on your missions? Will you get the reward that you were promised once you complete the missions? Or is something out there waiting for you in this untamed world? One way or another, you’re going to find out.
#23 Terminator Survival Project
Are you ready to step up and face Judgment Day? The Terminator Survival Project is a unique survival game set in the beloved world of the movies during a period when humanity is doing its best to fight off the forces of Skynet.
Before John Connor’s rise, you will attempt to face off against the T-800 androids and more to stay alive and keep humanity going.
The game will feature an original storyline, which means that almost anything can happen. Judgment Day may have been inevitable, but you can still fight back in the present!
#22 Beautiful Light
Are you ready for an intense gameplay loop that’ll have you either being a soldier or an “anomaly”? If so, then Beautiful Light is the game for you!
In it, you’ll either be part of a reaction group trying to take territory and weed out threats, or you’ll be a monster who is attempting to take out other players!
The game is a PvPvP title and aims to immerse you in this dark and depressing world to see just how well you can adapt to it. How far will you go in this new world? And how much will it change as you attempt to make it your own?
#21 NEO BERLIN 2087
In the future, an entire city will be turned on its head when the head of police gets murdered. You were one of the detectives under his employ, and you take it upon yourself to figure out the truth behind his death. But how can you do that when deeper mysteries and conspiracies are going on than you realize?
Things will only grow more intense and complicated when you meet the chief’s daughter, and new revelations and feelings threaten to tear everything apart. Will you be able to survive this city? Or will it take your life just like it did your boss?
#20 Helldivers 2
When you think of sci-fi soldiers, you likely picture them as “heroic warriors who wish to defend their race.”
But in Helldivers 2, you’re only technically that. The main part of your job is to use various kinds of destructive weaponry to blow enemy aliens up to kingdom come. All in the name of “peace.”
But don’t worry. You won’t be alone in your acts of destruction. You’ll be alongside your squadmates and have to take on the dangers together! The better you do, the more weapons and abilities you’ll have access to! So what are you waiting for? There’s a universe to blow up!
#19 Killing Floor 3
When you want a game about shooting more than anything else, you want to look at a title like Killing Floor 3.
Sure, the game DOES have a story. Basically, an evil corporation has come up with an army of monsters known as Zeds and has used them to take over. Thankfully, humanity has a resistance movement called Nightfall, of which you are a part, and you’re trying to fight back.
And fight back, you will! You’ll unload on the Zeds with all kinds of weapons and defeat them in hordes. Team up with friends to make the battle against them all the more fun.
#18 Contra: Operation Galuga
How about we take things back to a “golden age” of gaming and how a new entry in a classic series is set to honor what came before?
Contra: Operation Galuga will return fans to the shoot’em up styles of yesteryear while also giving them modern looks, sounds, and fun.
You’ll once again become the Contra commandos as you head to a new island to take on an evil terrorist organization. Unload on enemies with all manner of weapons to make them go “boom” and save the day. Plus, each character has abilities to help them stand out in the field! So load up and move out!
#17 System Shock 3
You’d think given the recent remake and the love that the franchise has in modern times that System Shock 3 would be a sure thing. But instead, the team over at Tencent can’t seem to decide if the game is “real or not” and whether they’ll still release it.
They announced it a long time back, but since then, it’s been anything but easy getting information out of them about the title, its release date, and more.
If it holds true to the two games of the past, it’ll be a fun RPG title with lots of options and the return of SHODAN, one of the best antagonists in video game history. For that alone, gamers should hold out hope.
#16 Perfect Dark
In all honesty, Perfect Dark should be a much bigger franchise than it is right now. The title came out during one of the “golden ages” of gaming and was beloved. But despite being made by a respected publisher in Rare, the game never really got past those early titles.
Fast forward to now, and the game series is coming back with a reboot. However, true to the franchise’s nature, things aren’t going smoothly. We don’t have much information about the game, and one can only hope that the team at Crystal Dynamics does as well with Joanna Dark as they did with Lara Croft.
#15 Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2
Does being a vampire suck? Well, we could answer that in many ways, but we’ll focus on the perks of being a vampire in the world of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2.
Yes, that’s a long title. Don’t look at us like that. We didn’t name the game!
Anyway, the title puts you as an Elder Vampire in the city of Seattle during a time of great turmoil. There’s a war on the horizon, and vampire kind is on edge. You have the power to turn the tide one way or another to decide your kinds future. The question is, what future do you desire? Stalk the night, drain your victims, and make key choices to determine that fate.
#14 Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game
Why wouldn’t we put a game with clowns at No.13? Clowns are evil, dang it!
In Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game, you’ll either have to fight off the clowns that are trying to take over Crescent Cove or BECOME one of the clowns and attempt to capture the humans that stand in the way of your invasion!
This 3v7 multiplayer title will force you to work together with your allies and use weapons, both basic and sci-fi, to get the advantages you need to come out on top! Or don’t and be on the losing side. Hey, there’s always next time, right?
#13 Outpost: Infinity Siege
Here’s a game that will test your skills in many forms if you want to see how far you can push yourself. Outpost: Infinity Siege focuses on you being on a world where dangers could come at you from all directions and you need to defend yourself against said threats.
So, you’ll take an outpost that’s fully mobile and then build it up to destroy your foes. Make it the way you want to so you can get through your trials and get to your goals.
Or, if you want a more “up close” tactic, jump into a mech and watch the game become an FPS!
#12 Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion
If you were a fan of the original mecha game by Marvelous, then you’ll be happy to learn that Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion has been announced and will likely be coming to multiple systems in 2024. The game is being kept under wraps for the most part, but they did confirm that the action that players loved in the initial title that debuted on Nintendo Switch will return.
The first game featured you creating a mecha and having insanely fast-paced mech battles on a world that was nothing like you had seen before.
So if the first game was nuts, then the second title might just be insane! Which, no doubt, the fans will love.
#11 Control 2
Here’s another game we’re not really sure about the release date for, but we can confirm it’s coming and is being made by Remedy and 505 Games.
Control 2 will likely continue the mind-warping tale of the original title that took the gaming world by storm. While we can’t say much about the story, if it’s anything like the original, you’ll need to work your way through a familiar bureau to get answers about a key mystery.
The real question is whether they’ll push the powers you get to an insane level like the original game did. That was one of the highlights that players really had fun with, so we’ll have to see how it goes.
#10 Crysis 4
Hearing that Crytek was making Crysis 4 made many video gamers happy. While the original trilogy wasn’t the most consistent of titles quality-wise, they did have a unique premise and solid gameplay that ensured the titles sold. Plus, the games were beautiful and really pushed the graphics of their period.
Plus, who wouldn’t want to don the power armor once again and see how far you can push it in next-gen systems? The game will continue the original trilogy’s campaign style while bringing multiplayer to bear. So choose the loadout you want to have for your armor and get to work!
#9 Marathon
The original Marathon titles came out in 2024 and is a fondly remembered title that helped set the tone for many Bungie titles in the future. Fast forward to 2024, and the game’s universe is coming back via an “extraction shooter” that’ll have players returning Tau Ceti IV and attempting to get rich or die trying.
The game will be PVP, which means you’ll need to keep your eyes open at all times in case another player is coming after you or is going for the same treasure you are.
Bungie knows how to make multiplayer titles work, so we’ll see how this goes.
#8 The Outer Worlds 2
When Obsidian Entertainment decided to take things to the stars for a unique RPG adventure, they absolutely delivered. They gave fans a fun, immersive, variety-filled campaign that took them to numerous worlds and areas they couldn’t even have dreamed of before. And now, they’re doing it again with The Outer Worlds 2.
While plenty of details are still unknown, we do know that the game will be set in a new star system with new planets and a new cast of characters. That means you won’t be able to expect what’s coming, and that means Obsidian will likely crank the dial up to eleven again to make things shine even further.
#7 Project Orion
Yeah, we’re going to be VERY clear on this one. Project Orion, aka Cyberpunk 2077 “Part 2,” is NOT coming out in 2024. Heck, it was just confirmed this year after MANY years of fixing on the main game by CD Projekt Red.
Given how long the first game took, it’d be a miracle if the game was done by late 2025 to early 2026. Plus, they’ve had layoffs recently, which won’t help.
But it’s important to talk about this because now that the first game has been “fixed” and the DLC delivered on the potential of the IP, gamers want to know what happens next, and the potential is positive.
#6 Marvel’s Iron Man
There will be plenty of titles in the last few entries that don’t have a definitive release window in 2024 but could come out if certain things work out. One of them is Marvel’s Iron Man by EA Motive.
This is the team behind the recent remake of a certain sci-fi horror title that many of you likely played and loved.
While Iron Man has had various games in the past, especially in team settings, this would be his first truly meaningful solo gaming adventure, and many are hyped for what this could mean.
Plus, since it’s Tony Stark, we’ll likely get to use many different versions of his suit!
#5 Destiny 2: The Final Shape
It’s been a long road to get here, but we’re finally here. Destiny 2: The Final Shape is the final piece of content from Bungie’s second space epic. In it, players will unite against The Witness in an attempt to save everything. But will you be able to wield the power needed to get the job done? Or will everything be destroyed?
The final DLC will offer a capper to the game’s story while also offering new challenges and abilities for players to check out. If you’ve been with the game since the beginning, you have no reason not to check out what Bungie has planned for its finale.
#4 Death Stranding 2
If anyone loves embracing a sci-fi setting more than anyone else, it’s Hideo Kojima and Death Stranding 2 will no doubt take fans to new heights of sci-fi madness once it arrives.
Heck, the first game alone was so trippy that we don’t know fully what was going on there. Which, knowing Hideo Kojima, is kind of the point. The first trailer for the new game highlighted many things that will get fans questioning what they’re seeing, including a bad guy pulling out an insane-looking guitar.
When it comes to Kojima titles, you just need to strap in and enjoy the ride.
#3 Beyond Good & Evil 2
…look, we’ll just say it: this next game is a unicorn. As in, we all hope it’s out there, waiting to be found and enjoyed, but we really don’t know if it’ll ever arrive.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 is a game that has technically been decades in the making. The first game was a cult classic that many hoped would get a sequel, and one was in the works! Then it went dark as company after company said they were working on it, and then they weren’t.
Then Ubisoft SAID it was coming and showed off a teaser for the prequel game, but then nothing came of it. It’s nice to have hope, but we can’t say this game will be in 2024 unless Ubisoft changes that perception.
#2 Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Final Fantasy fans likely need no introduction to the newest offerings from Square Enix. The second in a series of remakes centered around bringing Final Fantasy VII to the modern era of gaming. Picking up with Cloud and the party, players will venture out of Midgard into the wide world on a new… old adventure. Announced as part of the Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary Celebration, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth looks as if it will be a beautiful new entry into the franchise with wide-open detailed environments and engaging voice acting, as always there will be an enticing story to keep you coming back for more.
#1 Mass Effect 5
Can we say for certain that Mass Effect 5 is coming out in 2024? No. But can we speculate about it and hope Bioware doesn’t screw things up again? Yep.
The game will aim to recapture the magic of the original trilogy, the third game’s ending aside, of course, and fans are almost begging Bioware for new information.
If things do go as planned, they can expect a universe-spanning story, great stakes, amazing characters, and incredible action that will keep your heart pounding.
If it DOESN’T work out…well…we all remember that 4th game, right? Let’s just pray that doesn’t happen here.
