What is PCOD?

PCOD, also referred as Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease is a condition that contains the presence of multiple small cysts in the ovaries caused by an overproduction of a hormone called androgens. Cysts are the small sacs filled with fluids. PCOD is mainly characterized by irregularities in the menstrual cycle or no menstruation at all. Around 50% of the women with this disorder are overweight or obese, have skin issues, excessive hair growth on the body. Women with PCOD are at a greater risk of heart diseases, endometrial cancer, diabetes, hypertension and other lifestyle diseases.

Complications related to PCOD

There can be a number of health complications in women with PCOD. It is one of the most common causes of infertility in women. Other causes include insulin resistance and increase in the level of male hormone, androgen. The other health issues that may occur due to PCOD.

Weight management in PCOD

There is a strong connection between obesity, insulin resistance, and the PCOD. However, the ideal weight loss or weight management can be achieved with the help of certain lifestyle changes that include intake of healthy diet and physical exercise. Exercise is also very essential for PCOD women . Moderate exercise like brisk walking, jogging, cycling or swimming are all great exercises that help control PCOD. these type of exercise increase your bodies sensitivity to insulin, which reduces your risk of diabetes, lowers androgens and keeps your metabolic rate health. Making positive lifestyle changes are key to maintaining PCOS. Diet and exercise are two of the ways you can do for keeping the symptoms of PCOD under control

Role of diet in PCOD

Women with PCOD are often known to have insulin resistance that is these women are unable to produce insulin that the pancreas produce effectively. These women produce higher than normal levels of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is produced in your pancreas. It helps the cells in your body turn sugar into energy. Too high levels of insulin cause your ovaries to produce more androgens which cause n worsens the problem of PCOD.

Overweight is also one of the contributing factors in worsening the PCOD condition.

The intake of right diet can immensely help you to deal with the symptoms of PCOS. Since several researches have displayed the fact that diet and lifestyle changes play a vital role in controlling PCOD. Altering your diet should be the first thing on your radar when you are diagnosed with PCOD. Thus, the foods you should more rely on include, whole foods, high-fiber vegetables, lean protein, low glycemic foods, anti-inflammatory foods. On the other hand, you should avoid dairy, soy and gluten foods.
